Bishop Bjornberg was elected bishop of the Rocky Mountain Synod of the
ELCA in November of 1993. The Rocky Mountain Synod includes 175
congregations in Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, and El Paso,
Texas. He previously served as Pastor of Holy Cross Lutheran Church,
Albuquerque, New Mexico from 1981 to 1993 and as Associate Pastor at
First Lutheran Church, Colorado Springs, Colorado, from 1973 to 1981.
He was ordained in 1973.
Bishop Bjornberg grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He has a Bachelor
of Arts in English Literature and Philosophy from the University of
New Mexico and a Master of Divinity from Northwestern Lutheran
Theological Seminary, St. Paul, Minnesota. He also studied at
Princeton Seminary, and he has attended the Center for Creative
Leadership.
Currently serving as the ELCA Co-chair of the ELCA-United Methodist
Dialogue, the official conversation between the two denominations,
Bishop Bjornberg has been active in ecumenical relationships. He has
served as board chair of the New Mexico Conference of Churches. In
1991 he drafted the NMCC Faith and Order Protocol on Abortion.
As a member of the Conference of Bishops, Bishop Bjornberg has served
as liaison to the Board for the Division of Ministry and as an
advisory bishop to the ELCA Church Council.
He is married to Vianne E. Bjornberg, a Speech-Language Therapist in
private practice. They reside in Westminster, Colorado.
