eConnection Rocky Mountain Synod
Evangelical Lutheran Church in America

February 12, 2008
Planning is underway not only for the 2008 Synod Assembly in Denver (May 22-24) but also for the 2009 Synod Assembly in El Paso, Texas (April 30-May 2, 2009). It is not too soon for you to be selecting voting members to the 2009 Assembly, as it will be extremely important to make travel arrangements EARLY (summer of 2008!) in order to reserve the limited plane tickets to El Paso.

As for the 2008 Assembly, it promises to be an extraordinary event with two exceptional speakers (Mark Powell and Diana Butler Bass), meaningful worship, and an inspiring celebration of 20 years of ministry taking the form of a festival of hymns.

The downtown Hyatt Regency in Denver will provide a comfortable and beautiful setting. The Hyatt Hotel has offered us an unheard-of rate of $119 a night for a new, downtown hotel. You may arrive early or stay late (over the Memorial Day weekend) for the event rate.

Assembly registration and hotel reservations will all be ONLINE beginning on March 1!

Monday noon is the deadline for submitting announcements for the Tuesday edition. You may "reply" to this email to submit an announcement.

Church in Society Awards:
Incentives for Ministry

The Rocky Mountain Synod Church in Society Board provides annual awards up to $1000.00 to assist efforts in this Synod that demonstrate an "inciting to action" of the church in society. The objective of the award is to provide incentive and support to assist the church's efforts and engagement in meeting the needs of society through projects that involve the members with those being served through ministry.

These projects should demonstrate ways of going beyond providing financial contributions to a charity. For example, projects might provide services for persons affected by poverty, homelessness, hunger, domestic or substance abuse, aging or health related issues. The project may represent the effort of a single congregation or the co-operative effort of several congregations, related agencies, or other entities; e.g. Interfaith Hospitality Network, Refugee Services, etc.
The application may be downloaded. The deadline for application is February 15, 2008.

Video Contest:
How to Spot

The video may be a commercial, skit, story, song, art piece or any other means and will be judged in the areas of Lutheran identity, evangelism, diversity, variety of ages involved, and creativity. Prizes will be announced at Synod Assembly in May. First place will receive $1,000, second $600, third $250, fourth $150 (made out to the sponsoring congregation or ministry group.) The prize money is provided by a grant from ELCA Synodical Relations in support of communicating Lutheran identity within the synod.

Lutheran Men in Mission

LMM Launches "One Year to Live" Men's Ministry in RMS

On any given Sunday morning in the U.S., 5.5 million women worship without their husbands present. Further, studies tell us that men ages 18 to 34 are the most under-churched group in America.  Such a trend needs our best creative ministry efforts. To that end, Lutheran Men in Mission (LMM) of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America has developed an unprecedented new ministry called "One Year to Live". Bethany Lutheran Church in Denver served as the "pilot church" for this new venture with amazing results.

According to Ed Cleaver, co-leader of the Bethany men's group, "For all 16 men in our pilot group the retreat was a major turning point in their lives, and nearly all of them are actively involved in the follow-up group more than four months later." (See the Bethany newsletter article)

In a letter to all ELCA churches in the Rocky Mountain Synod, Pastor Dan Bollman exclaims, "We encourage your congregation to join this movement!"  To do so, each congregation needs a group of 3-5 men to become the "One Year to Live" leadership group for their church.

Please identify this small group of lay-leaders and forward their contact information to Doug Haugen at 773-380-2566 or Doug.Haugen@ELCA.org . To participate in the launch of "One Year to Live" in the Rocky Mountain Synod, this men's ministry leadership team needs to be identified by February 13. Participating congregations will be asked to learn more about the program through a conference call on Sunday evening February 17 or Tuesday evening February 19.

The Church Responds to Disasters
Disaster Response logo

Relief after a Disaster

Disasters are tragic events that disrupt the normal routine of life, causing loss and human suffering. During a disaster such as an earthquake, major flood, tornado, civil war, or famine, the overwhelming concern is for the safety and preservation of life. After a disaster, the relief process begins. Concerns for safety, life and health are high priorities in the immediate post-disaster stage. Relief activities are geared to meet these concerns. Food, safe drinking water, medicine, and shelter must be provided.

The church has always ministered in disasters, bringing God's Word of comfort, healing and renewal to the variety and depth of human suffering. Sometimes the church's response occurs as Christian congregations share God's love with those who suffer through illness, death, unemployment, and other personal tragedies. When a major disaster strikes, local needs often outstrip the available local resources. In such catastrophes the whole church marshals its resources and reaches out to help.

To Donate to ELCA Disaster Response

You may give through your own congregation or synod or by sending your check directly to: ELCA Disaster Response, P.O. Box 71764, Chicago, Illinois 60694-1764. Please specify whether you'd like your gift to go to ELCA Domestic Disaster Response or ELCA International Disaster Response. Your gifts will be used in full - 100 percent - to help your designated community recover from disasters. Learn more by visiting http://www.elca.org/disaster  .
