Fourth
Sunday in Lent
Discerner of hearts,
you look beneath our outward appearance and see
your image in each of us. Banish in us the blindness
that prevents us from recognizing truth, so we may see
the world through your eyes and with the compassion of
Jesus Christ who redeems
us. Amen

Presiding
Bishop Mark S. Hanson's
Easter
Message 2008
"For you have died, your life is hidden
with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life is
revealed, then you also will be revealed with him in
glory." (Colossians 3:3-4)
"You
have died." The words resonate because this world's
violence and suffering--so pervasive, so needless, so
relentless--haunt every human community and life. Where
death rules, hope lies entombed in endless
grief.
Another death--the crucifixion of
Jesus--changed everything. God is not hidden, but
present through suffering, sorrow, and death. Jesus is
God's resounding "yes!" to the steadfastness of God's
forgiving love, embodied on a cross.
The death of
Jesus shows no partiality. It was for all nations and
all people--for them, for you, for me. Your life is now
with Christ. In baptism you have died. Hidden with
Christ, no longer entombed in grief, your life carries
the promise of glory.
From that first day of
resurrection onward, God has been raising up messengers
of salvation, heralds of peace, and testifiers of the
promised glory. You are a witness of the hope to come.
Quite simply, Christ is your life, my life, our life.
You have no other than this One who lives resurrected in
you.
Christ is risen! Alleluia!

Joyful
Sounds in China
The sounds
of hustle and bustle are all around China. Beijing is
readying for the Olympic Games, the wheels of industry
continue to turn and cities are growing at an enormous
rate. There is another sound being heard in China, also,
-- a joyful sound coming from Chinese churches where you
can hear the singing of children in Sunday school, the
ringing of hammers as new churches are built and the
splashing of water at Baptism. All are such joyful
sounds! Join China Service Ventures as they offer 3
travel opportunities in 2008 to hear joyful sounds of
God's people at work. Save these dates: March 25-April
12, October 5-18 and October 19-November

The Story of the Life of Christ in Music, Art and
Scripture
First Lutheran
Church,
1515 North Cascade Ave., Colorado Springs, CO
March 7 at 8:00 pm,
March 8 at
4:00 and 7:00 pm,
March 9 at 3:00
pm
Inspired by a summertime California
event entitled "Pageant of the Masters", the idea was
brought to Colorado Springs by Joan Kuehn, First
Lutheran's Director of Music, in 1994. Kuehn and Judy
Wach, Director of Special Events at First Lutheran, were
looking for a way to make a unique contribution to the
community. Well-known works of religious art are
recreated using costumed actors set against reproduced
backdrops and accompanied by Scriptural text appropriate
to the work, all performed in a musical setting
featuring singers and instrumentalists. Among the best
known works portrayed are Leonardo da Vinci's "The Last
Supper" and Michelangelo's "The
Pieta".
The music is provided by the
80 members of the First Lutheran Choir. Many
instrumentalists also come from the congregation.
Costumes and make-up are all provided on a volunteer
basis and after fourteen years, the skills of the
volunteers are finely honed. No
tickets are issued, so First Lutheran recommends coming
early to be sure of a seat. The Gallery of Living Art is
not only a presentation, but a worshipful experience you
will never forget. For more information, please call
First Lutheran Church at 719-632-8836 or visit their
website: www.flccsc.org |

SINGING
WITH THE LUTHERANS
by Garrison Keillor
I have made fun of
Lutherans for years - who wouldn't, if you lived
in Minnesota?
But I have also sung with Lutherans and that is one of
the main joys of life, along with hot baths and fresh
sweet corn.
We make fun of Lutherans for their
blandness, their excessive calm, their fear of giving
offense, their lack of speed and also for their secret
fondness for macaroni and cheese. But nobody sings like
they do.
If you
ask an audience in New
York City, a relatively Lutheran-less place, to
sing along on the chorus of 'Michael Row the Boat
Ashore', they will look daggers at you as if you had
asked them to strip to their underwear. But if you do
this among Lutherans they'll smile and row that boat
ashore and up on the beach! And down the
road!
Lutherans are bred from childhood to sing
in four-part harmony. It's a talent that comes from
sitting on the lap of someone singing alto or tenor or
bass and hearing the harmonic intervals by putting your
little head against that person's rib cage. It's natural
for Lutherans to sing in harmony. We're too modest to be
soloists, too worldly to sing in unison. When you're
singing in the key of C and you slide into the A7th and
D7th chords, all two hundred of you, it's an emotionally
fulfilling moment.
