Greetings!

prayer:
God of all who are cast down,
you call us to seek good
and to meet oppression with justice.
Teach us to find salvation
in the emptying of ourselves for the sake of those in need,
so that goodness may prevail.
Amen.

On the Blog: Thoughts on Lutheran Identity
Wayne Shultz... "Could it be that our need to talk about identity, meaningful discipleship and evangelism, and to manage conflict is not so much the result of differences among the members of our community, but the inevitable consequence of the organization we have created?"

Leslie Whited Vance... "Each generation might rediscover their vital importance in the cross- generational dance that is a faith community --- shaper and shaped. And we might give great attention to those who are elders; especially those who are wise elders among the many elders."

Dena Williams ... "If discipleship does not include social/political advocacy, someone ought to tell Jesus--he doesn't seem to know. "

Matthew Bersagel ... "We have many sins to confess regarding how we express and live out our core reason to exist as a church, a confessional movement, or a synod...."

Utah outreach to elementary school children
Lutheran Social Service of Utah and the Episcopal Diocese of Utah’s Campus Ministry is collecting presents for Edison Elementary School. Edison is in the Salt Lake School District and is considered one of the lowest income schools in the valley. We are asking your help in supporting our effort. There are two ways in which you can help: one by ‘adopting’ children and buying gifts for which they have asked for or by giving monetary gifts. This year we are excited to add a new dimension to our effort. We will have a gift room where the children will choose gifts for their parents. This will allow the children to give and receive presents. If you would like to help, please contact Arica Curry at curry315@hotmail.com. If you would like to give a monetary gift please send the gift to: Lutheran Social Service of Utah, 1800 South West Temple Suite 305, Salt Lake City UT 84115. If you are writing a check please write Holiday on the memo line. Financial contributions are tax-deductible.

BOOK REVIEW by Jean Larson
“A LIFE WORTH LEADING”
Eric Burtness, senior pastor, St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, Beaverton, Oregon, Augsburg/Fortress Publishers

Using the five Biblical principles espoused by Rick Warren in his popular “40 Day Purpose-Drive Life”, Burtness adds his own understanding as a Lutheran pastor, raising the importance of living a Spirit-led life, life with a purpose. Acknowledging the fact that there may be theological differences with Warren, he uses Warren’s principles of Worship, Fellowship, Discipleship, Ministry and Evangelism, to inspire and guide those who are “wandering through the wilderness”. Helpful questions at the end of each chapter make it a great small group study. Purchase from Augsburg Fortress.
