Advent 1
As the dark awaits the dawn,
So we await your light.
O Star of promise, scatter night,
Loving bright, loving bright,
Till shades of fear are gone.

  Madagascar Trip
A Thanksgiving Greeting from Madagascar Delegation
Dave Jarvis writes, "We are doing well. We just returned from a visit to Betela Seminary and had a great visit there. We had a chance to share about our worship in the United States, about diaconal ministers and their roles in our church, and about outdoor ministries. It was a lively discussion. The hosptiality at the seminary was incredible. We had fabulous food topped off today with a wonderful fresh turkey dinner in celebration of Thanksgiving. We are back in Mahajanga. It was very hot at the seminary and we are excited to be in air conditioning again. We have had a little sickness within the group but all are well now. We are headed to Antsrinana tomorrow by plane. Excited for the new adventures. On this day of Thanksgiving we are greatful for this trip, for our families back home, for our friends both here and in the US, and for a God that loves us so much. Know that God is doing amazing things in this corner of the world."

Another Idea for the LBW's
This idea comes from Leslie Whited Vance in Salt Lake City, Utah who states: While worshipping at my home congregation last month, Immanuel Lutheran Church (Chicago) the recycling of old hymnals was offered. I took some home and have been giving them to seniors, people grieving and people who are home bound as I visit. The old hymns and psalms are a great comfort.

If you have an idea for recycling the old LBW's, please send an email message to: communications@rmselca.org

2006 Christmas Message
Presiding Bishop Mark S. Hanson

"The Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory..." (John 1:14).

We live in a visited world. On that holy night twenty centuries ago, God visited the world in the miracle of Bethlehem. Held in Mary's arms that night was the revelation of steadfast, unbounded love for all humanity. The birth of Jesus disclosed God’s saving will and eternal desire for reconciliation and peace.

In this season of Christmas, we encounter again Jesus, sent from God for our salvation. As the Word is proclaimed in both simple buildings and cathedrals of grandeur, we receive the good news of God's love in Christ Jesus for the whole earth. We witness the mystery of rebirth in the waters of Baptism and rejoice as new ones are embraced by the community of faith. As bread is broken and wine poured in the Eucharist, we give thanks for the real presence of Christ in our midst.

We gather with the whole Church for the celebration of our Lord's Nativity. In our gathering, however, we hear the sounds of discord throughout the world. From divisions caused by walls of separation, from the struggles of many for survival from disasters, devastation, hunger, and poverty, from the dread of rampant disease and the spread of HIV and AIDS, from war and the threat of war, even with nuclear weapons, from broken relationships in homes and hostilities within communities and countries, we seek rescue. We yearn for the gracious, healing, and reconciling Word of the Prince of Peace.

We hear the angel say, "Do not be afraid." With that message of courage, we realize as believers that we are never alone. We have been claimed by God and made a part of the household of faith.

So we join with the whole Church on earth, lifting our voices with renewed hope. In so doing, we join the grand anthem:
Joy to the world, the Lord is come!
Let earth receive her king....

The Rev. Mark S. Hanson
Presiding Bishop
Evangelical Lutheran Church in America

Ron writes, "I love the season of Advent! The anticipation marked and counted down by the Advent wreath. The cool blue candles reminding us that we have four full weeks to do some spiritual housecleaning and renovating. The prayers inviting God to "stir up" our lives and our longings. Advent is all about focusing on the crèche of Christ and not getting overwhelmed by the crush of the culture. It is about slowing down to say and pray, 'Come, Lord Jesus' Maranatha!"
