Announcements

Fraud Alert from the Denver DA
Be alerted to a new email scam, in which emails purportedly from amazon.com or e-Bay list an item you ordered, often a high price Sony computer. The email provides the amount being charged to your credit card, with an opportunity to cancel on a supplied link if you did not place the order. This scam has been very lucrative as victims believed someone had used their information to order an item and they simply wanted to stop it -- only in canceling the order did they become victimized! Ignore these emails, and never respond to emails or callers asking you to submit personal data.

Living in the “Shadows of the Ghosts” of Grief
A special day with Dr. Alan Wolfelt is Tuesday, December 12 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.This informative workshop will help members of the caregiving community who want to further develop their knowledge and skills surrounding grief and loss. Dr. Alan Wolfelt will introduce the concept of people living in the “shadow of the ghosts” of grief. The person living in the shadow of the ghosts of grief has symptoms that suggest that the pain of grief has been inhibited, suppressed or denied. These symptoms stay present, driving the person’s life trying to get the attention they deserve. Plan to join us and learn from one of North America’s leading death educators. Cost: $75 donation includes lunch and a certificate of participation. This program will take place at the new Horan & McConaty location at 5303 E. County Line Rd. (1 block west of Holly on County Line). Please register by December 6 using the form on the event flyer. For additional information, call 720.748.9908.

You Are Invited to the Christmas Posadas
Join the celebration of Las Posadas and Immigration on Sunday evening, December 10, at Zion Lutheran Church, 1070 S. Foothill Dr., Salt Lake City, Utah, 5-7:00. The traditional Mexican festival reenacts the story of Joseph seeking lodging for his pregnant young wife, Mary, weary from travel and heavy with child. A panel discussion connects the need for hospitality in this Biblical story with today’s immigration issues. Alma Armendariz is a guest speaker. The celebration includes traditional Mexican desserts, a piņata for the children and a donkey for the procession.

On Sunday, December 10th at 5:00 p.m. Cross of Hope in Albuquerque, New Mexico will celebrate their 16th Annual Las Posadas. Participants will gather at the manger at Cross of Hope and then proceed through the neighborhood. Following the procession, we celebrate the coming of Jesus with a green chile stew and posole meal in the fellowship hall. Macaroni-n-cheese and hotdogs are provided as well for a child-friendly dinner. The nursery is available for children 0-4 years from 4:45 to 7:15 p.m. or you are welcome to bring a stroller if you wish your toddler to join the procession. Youngsters 5 years and older are encouraged to to walk with the processon. Afterwards, from 5:45 to 7:15 p.m., children may enjoy the well staffed youth room full of fun activities, crafts and storytelling, while parents enjoy a second cup of coffee or maybe another Christmas cookie. The event is free and all are welcome, so invite friends, dress warmly and bring a flashlight.

On Saturday, December 16 at 5:30 p.m. at Iglesia Luterana Cristo Rey located at 620 East Yandell, in El Paso, Texas, Las Posadas will begin at the Youth Center (corner of Ochoa and Yarnell). This is where the Christmas play and the service will take place. “Creating Meaningful Funeral Ceremonies – A Guide for Caregivers”
Dr. Alan Wolfelt

Alan Wolfelt has a number of books to his credit but one that would train clergy and lay persons to accompany a family as they walk the way of dying, death, and grieving would be a valuable and meaningful ministry of any congregation and of the church. A trained group of grief “facilitators” could accompany the family before and after the death – a specific Stephen’s Ministry. Alan’s booklet “Creating Meaningful Funeral Ceremonies – A Guide for Caregivers” (63 pages) is an excellent resource and is a ground-breaking handbook full of insights about the importance of meaningful funeral ceremonies. For more information about the booklet, please visit the website for: product details. Dr. Wolfelt has many other resources for mourners and bereavement and they can be found at www.centerforloss.com
