The Invitation to Service Committee was formed out of the Candidacy
Committees experience that a sufficient number of viable candidates were not
emerging. The committee also felt that many came to the entrance point and had not been
helped adequately with preparation for candidacy and the discernment process.
Over the years the committee has hosted events to help people become aware
of the many options for public ministry in the ELCA. The committee has also presented
opportunities for interested individuals to explore methods of discernment. It has been
the effort of this committee to assist and augment the encouragement that can come to
individuals from the congregation. They have afforded opportunities for people in the
various areas of ministry in the church to meet with and explore with interested
individuals the issues related to their particular vocation.
All pastors and rostered leaders are obliged to encourage individuals to
consider public ministry in this church. However, some do not have the gifts to be as
helpful as they would like. This committee works to find opportunities for support with
gifted leaders working with candidates.
Over the past few years the committee has hosted very successful retreats
designed to help participants become clear in their vocational discernment.
However, it has also become clear to the committee that new directions
have to be explored in extending the invitation to serve. As a result the committee is
meeting to explore several options. Some of the items being considered but not yet
finalized:
An every-other-year retreat event
Retreat events with specific focus for second career, youth and
adolescent groups and the like.
Conference specific events designed to help conferences bring together
people interested in ministry opportunities and vocational discussion.
Supportive material and plans for pastors and rostered leaders to conduct
invitational activities in their local congregations and ministries.
The work of this committee is quite important. These dedicated people
usher in those who welcome the opportunity to advance the work of the Gospel in the
church.
