Madagascar - our sister Synods
In 2002, the Women of the ELCA, Rocky Mountain Synod pledged to support the
people of Madagascar. In Madagascar there are two sister synods to
the Rocky Mountain Synod: the Mahajanga and Antsiranana Synods of the Malagasy
Lutheran Church. The ELCA is active in Madagascar supporting the Betela
Lutheran Regional Seminary in Madagascar which educates pastors and women
theologians. Women are not yet allowed to become ordained in the
Malagasy Lutheran Church. There is hope that after the current bishop
relinquishes his post that this will become likely. In the meantime, we
continue to support Christian educational activities for women. Transportation
is difficult in Madagascar, as there are few roads and few vehicles.
One way to support the efforts of the ELCA in Madagascar is to support the
"Bikes for Betela" program, which provides bicycles to the students
training at Betela so they can bring the Gospel to neighboring communities. Another
critical need is for housing at the Betela seminary. The seminary is
located in a remote part of the country and there is little commerce around to
assist families that are attending Betela to make a living. Therefore,
housing is a critical need for those studying at Betela. Gifts to the
"Seeds of Hope" program can help support this ministry. How much do
you know about the lives of the people of Madagascar? Knowing the trials
that they face in their everyday lives can help you understand what you can do
to help spread the Gospel to this region of the world. The Rocky Mountain
Synod sponsors mission trips to Madagascar. Find out how you can
participate in the next upcoming trip (currently scheduled for July
2005). More on Madagascar >
