Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

The pictures we are viewing on the news are very disturbing.  We ask, "How can this be happening here in the United States?"  "Where is the help?"  Many are suffering and hurting; many have not had food or water for days.  Know that Lutherans are responding! We have established three distribution sites in Lutheran and Episcopal churches in Mississippi to provide food, water, and immediate health care.  Similar sites are opening in Alabama.

I am presently in Houston, Texas, and have visited the Astrodome to see how Lutherans can assist in the critical situation here.  I spoke to many individuals and families this morning and though angry, frustrated, and  wondering what will happen next, they are thankful that the church is here.  A woman wanted to pray, we prayed; a young man wanted to share a psalm, we said the psalm together; families were singing their favorite hymn, and I joined in. All were thankful for their lives and that the church has heard their plea for help.

Lutherans have committed to serving food and water in the Astrodome.  We are in process of determining other potential meal programs in San Antonio and Dallas as well.  As always, we are coordinating these efforts with the local Red Cross and United Way to ensure that those in these shelters are provided an appropriate meal, water, and health care.

As we have every day, please continue to pray without ceasing for those who are suffering and those who are serving:

God of mercy,
Hear the cries of those who suffer,
give comfort to those who have lost so much,
solace to those who mourn,
healing to the injured,
and strength to those who have come to their aid.

Psalm 139 kept coming to my mind this morning and continues to be my prayer this day.

If I take the wings of the morning
and settle at the farthest limits of the sea,
even there your hand shall lead me,
and your right hand shall hold me fast. (Psalm 139:9-10)

Peace to all this day.
