Alternative Gift of Maize / Thanksgiving Day Prayer Walk / Bag Sale
This interdenominational prayer walk was originally conceived to alleviate widespread hunger around Haydon Lutheran Hospital in Tanzania. We sent a mission team there, who informed us about hundreds of thousands of deaths as a result of severe drought there. Our sister congregation of ~ 150 members made and sold small replicas of bags of maize (Tanzania’s staple food) as an alternative gift for Christmas. Each bag sold for $4 each – the price of a real bag of maize in Tanzania, which normally feeds a family of 4 for a month. We sold 150 bags. A prayer walk was held in conjunction with the sale, for which we collected $1200 in cash donations.
